Meditation brings you to a place of detachment from your thoughts. When I am in meditation, I observe the thoughts that come into my head like a child trying to get my attention. My brain tries to create all kinds of fantastical thoughts to get me to attach to. Sometimes they are fear based, often it is creative and sometimes they make no sense at all, like a weird dream.
Because I have a regular practice, I can easily move back into the place of quiet or what Deepak Chopra calls "The Gap." Before I made the commitment to live the "Mina Project", I had a much more difficult time discerning what was real, or important. Chopra refers to it all as an illusion.
Fear is an illusion. We are only blocked from living to our full potential because of what limits we put on ourselves. Recently I have watched some friends go through some severe psychological pain. I have been there, and I can fully empathize with it. What I know now, is that our emotional fear is directly connected to our psyche. When we allow the two to work together, we reinforce the discontent. If you are in emotional distress and you allow the fear thoughts to attach to the emotions, you get a reaction that is not only negative - it can be deadly. States of being such as depression, addiction or rage are all fear thoughts. These are manifestations of emotion + negative thoughts + physiology(chemical imbalance) = self defeat or self destruction.
One of the best Modern teachers on the planet today, who really gets it and explains it perfectly is Eckhart Tolle. I recommend reading his books, THE POWER OF NOW or A NEW EARTH, Awakening to your Life's Purpose.
